Despite the
enormous opportunities for floriculture production in Ethiopia commercial floriculture is a new
industry, dating back to only 1992 with establishment of meskel flowers PLC the
first to specialize in the production and export of cut-roses in Ethiopia.
However, since
then the local floriculture industry has shown a substantial growth. During the
period 1997- 2006 the export of cut flowers from Ethiopia have registered a
momentous growth both in terms of volume and value, increasing from 39,773 kg
to 8.54 million kg and from Birr 1.02 million to Birr 219.47 million in terms of volume and value respectively.
